Play Golf in Chimanimani

Action at Number 4 Green

That’s right you can play golf in Chimanimani. As you motor into the village look to your left, you will catch sight of the Chimanimani Club and the course stretching up the valley between Greenmount and the village.

Josiah is in charge of the little ones who will gather around as soon as they spot your golf bag. Today my caddy was an eight year old called Nomore…. he not only spotted every one of my wayward balls but he correctly advised me to change my club whenever I was overly conservative or bold in my choices. Everybody is super friendly, cheerful, helpful and it does not cost a great deal.  This combination of things is, I am sure you will agree, exceedingly rare! Two dollars to your caddy for 9 holes, three dollars for 18 holes (and for very many reasons, we ask you to stick to this amount) and a donation to Shane Kidd for the upkeep of the course, if you so wish. If you feel you want to reward your caddy more generously the best thing you could do is give him a couple of second hand balls and a tee or two. The youngsters here are mad to play and we have a regular caddy competition. Some of our  teenage caddies have played (Courtesy of funds from the Royal and Ancient) Leopard Rock, Hillside and almost all the Harare Courses.

Freeman sets up for his drive

Freeman drives - a beauty! He birdied the hole.

Their stories and adventures have rocked the little community of children who live around the course and they are all dreaming of becoming the next Tiger Woods. Look at the set up and swing of Freeman… he also features in my blog entitled “Visitors helping children”

You need not play alone either… locals like Shane Kidd and Doug van de Ruit, myself as well as  several player/caddies are always keen to play a round with visitors. So if you are heading to Chimanimani toss your golf bag into the boot – you will find a wonderful, testing little course. Just give me a call and I will happily see who is in town.

This post brings back so many happy memories of the game that we had there in 1996 – yes, I know it sounds like a long time ago, which it is, but it is almost as if everything has been caught in a time warp – I remember that our friends’ daughter Colleen was about 13 at the time, and the local children were absolutely fascinated by this little girl playing golf! I think that there must have been 20 children running around spotting and being the caddies.
